Diabetes Nutritional Management Toolkit
In 2019, to strengthen and standardise the management of diabetes in primary care in the Caribbean, CARPHA launched an updated version of the CARPHA Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes in Primary Care in the Caribbean. The clinical guidelines are presented in five modules.
A Needs Assessment of Nutrition Services carried out in ten Member States in 2022, revealed that there was limited human resource capacity to counsel and provide nutrition services to persons living with diabetes (PwD) - paucity of trained Nutrition and Dietetic professionals - as well as a lack of standardised nutritional support tools for the implementation of the nutrition component of the CARPHA clinical guidelines.
In response, CARPHA developed nutritional tools to support the implementation of the nutrition component of the CARPHA Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes in Primary Care in the Caribbean. The tools were developed using the guidelines and current evidence on what works from the literature and consultations with nutrition and dietetic experts and other professionals in the Region. Some tools are meant specifically for health care professionals who are involved in the management of PwD, while other tools are for PwD.
The toolkit was developed as part of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) - funded project “Strengthening Strategic Intelligence and Partnership Approaches to Prevent and Control NCDs and Strengthen Regional Health Security in the Caribbean.
