This video deals with ethical challenges that some low and middle-income countries with vulnerable populations can face in dealing with highly infectious, high mortality epidemics. It focuses on dilemmas healthcare-related professionals must contend with when working with limited medical resources. The video highlights the struggle of some local research ethics committees in balancing potential benefits versus possible harm to research participants and communities as they review a proposal to test a vaccine. It also looks at the ways in which cultural values and the belief systems of affected communities can come into conflict with specific measures that scientists and researchers consider important.
